This assignment (worth 40 points) is due by the date listed on Ga View. The assignment must be typed (you should type the thesis, outline, and references in the same document, and upload a single document).
The thesis statement should be a complete sentence that will clearly show me what literature or characters you will examine in your paper and what your position or focus will be. (15 points)
The outline should be in the form of a topic outline. Your topic outline should have two to four sections (not including the introduction and conclusion), as well as two subsections for the body of the paper. You can check your old composition textbook for sample topic outlines. You can also see the sample thesis and outline below. (15 points)
Thesis: Antigone and Hamlet both have problems with their royal uncles, but both characters have different ways of challenging the throne to assert their humanity.
Antigone’s rebellion
Antigone’s reckless courage
Antigone’s death wish
Hamlet’s rebellion
Hamlet’s indecisiveness
Hamlet’s tragic end
Note that the Introduction and Conclusion are not needed in a topic outline; it is assumed that all papers will have an introduction and conclusion.
The references should include all the information needed for MLA citations (the titles, authors’ names, publisher, years of publication, etc.) of two or more books or journal articles beyond the class textbook. You will receive credit for just your full text-based references obtained through the Galileo database, not any web sites you choose to submit (unless the electronic version is a full-text copy of a previously published work, not merely another translation of one of the stories in the textbook). Finally, each of your references should be followed by three to four sentences, which not only tells me what the article or book (or chapter in the book) is about, but also tells me how it relates to your paper topic (10 points).
For example, if you had a research paper topic for another class concerning the rise of communism, an annotated reference for George Orwell’s Animal Farm, might look something like this:
Orwell, George. Animal Farm. Essex: Pearson, 2014. Print.
Animal Farm is a fable about an animal revolution that falls apart due to individual greed and envy. This book is useful to my research because I want to examine Orwell’s view of totalitarian governments through his novel. Although the original book is about 80 years old, Orwell’s understanding of human nature is still instructive today.
As usual if you have any questions, ask me EARLY in your drafting process, not an hour before your work is due.
IF YOU SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, IT WILL BE PENALIZED FIVE POINTS.
Good luck, everyone!
