Identify one historical event from Australian history and analyse how it has affected the lives of Indigenous Australians

This essay has two parts and is based on the materials and content from the first six weeks of the unit. In this essay, you will:

Identify one historical event from Australian history and analyse how it has affected the lives of Indigenous Australians, and the relevance this historical and cultural knowledge has for teaching and learning in Australia.

This assignment will be divided into parts A and B, which are outlined as follows:

Part A – 1000 words

Identify one historical event from Australian history and analyse how it has affected the lives of Indigenous Australians. You must choose from the following list of examples:

  • Colonisation
  • Coranderrk Reserve
  • Land rights
  • The 1967 Referendum
  • The Redfern Speech
  • The 2008 National Apology.

You will need to:

  • describe the event
  • analyse the effects and impacts of the event on Indigenous Australians, both in the past and present time.

Part B – 600 words

Conclude the final part of your essay by discussing teaching and learning with Indigenous perspectives. In your discussion, include the following:

  • A summary of the arguments that support the teaching and learning of Indigenous Australian histories, cultures and perspectives in early childhood education or primary education.
  • An explanation of how this event could be taught in either early childhood or primary education.

Consider the following essay writing tips:

  • It will be essential to use the unit readings and resources to support your discussion. Avoid overuse of internet sources.
  • Refer to the assignment rubric to make sure you have understood the expectations of the
assignment and how it will be marked.
  • As this is an essay, it should be written primarily in the third person.
  • Include a brief introduction, clear paragraphs for each new idea and a concise conclusion.
  • An essay plan or mind map before you start writing will help—even if you only record the key points, plan the order they should go in, and provide the content of the introduction and conclusion.
  • Make sure that you proofread your essay carefully before submission. Poor grammar and typographical errors detract from the quality of your work.
  • Acknowledge all sources used to develop your ideas, both in the body of the essay and in the reference list at the end. Citing references adds strength to your arguments and avoids plagiarism. References should be constructed according to APA 7th edition formatting.

What This Might Look Like- Suggested word counts are given below as a guide only

Paragraph 1: Introduction (<200 words)

In this paragraph you need to:

  • Provide a road map of your essay. You need to introduce the essay topic/statement in your own words and establish the angle of your argument. This is the essay statement for your reference:
  • Identify one historical event from Australian history and analyse how it has affected the lives of Indigenous Australians, and the relevance this historical and cultural knowledge has for teaching and learning in Australia. Weave this statement into your introduction.
  • Introduce the key points you are going to discuss within your body paragraphs in a clear and succinct way. The challenge is to be specific about what you are going to discuss in your body paragraphs without going into too much detail. Leave the evidence for your body paragraphs.

Important note: You do not need a separate introduction for Part A and Part B. Your introduction needs to introduce the key points you are going to discuss in both Part A and Part B.

PART A

Paragraph 2: Describe the event. (400 words)

This paragraph relates to C1: Description of the event from Australian history.

In this paragraph you need to:

  • Choose one historical event from the list above to describe. Describe the big picture as well as details of the historical event including movements, practices, policies and occurrences etc. that constitute the historical event. You must demonstrate that you understand the key aspects of the historical event. Provide relevant examples that illustrate cultural and political bias. For example, if you choose Colonisation you may like to discuss Terra Nullius, Genocide and the Stolen Generations and specific Assimilation Policies and/or White Australia Policies as detailed examples of cultural and political bias. Remember to include a discussion of the dominant culture at the time of the event.
  •  Each historical event from the list in the table above will have detailed examples of cultural and political bias. You need to research these. A ballpark figure of how many examples to include would be 2-4 remembering that you need to provide sufficient detail and evidence for each example. Aim for at least 1 source per example with a minimum of 3 sources overall for your description of the event.

Paragraph 3: Analyse the effects and impacts of the event on Indigenous Australians, both in the past and present time. (400 words)

In this paragraph you need to:

  • Analyse the effects and impacts of the historical event by identifying the barriers (or conversely, windows) to success associated with the event. For example, if you choose The Redfern SpeechLinks to an external site.  you will need to analyse, in detail, the specific outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a result of this historical event. You need to discuss the outcomes that occurred at the time and that are still occurring in the present. You may choose to identify the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal Children from Their Families and the Bringing Them Home report as examples of barriers and/or windows to success. Be very specific about the outcomes. These should be supported by evidence including data.
  • You will need to structure your analysis of the event around the following points as identified in the Live Collab:
    • What was the effect at the time (past)? 2-3 sources
    • What does this mean for Indigenous Australians? 2-3 sources
    • What are the impacts of the event today? 2 sources
    • What link does this have to the current educational context? 1-2 sources

Important note: Each historical event from the list in the table above will have barriers (or conversely, windows) to success associated with the event. You need to research these. A ballpark figure of how many examples to include would be 4 remembering to relate them to the above dot points.

Part B

Paragraph 4: A summary of the arguments that support the teaching and learning of Indigenous Australian histories, cultures and perspectives in early childhood education or primary education. (200 words)

In this paragraph you need to:

  • Justify the importance and benefits of teaching and learning Indigenous Australian histories, cultures and perspectives. What are the benefits to students both Indigenous and non-Indigenous?
  • Support your justification of the importance and benefits with examples from the unit readings. Be specific. Think beneficial for ALL students in terms of cultural competency and representation of self is important to feel concerned by the education that occurs (attendance, the sharing of knowledge).

Paragraph 5: An explanation of how this event could be taught in either early childhood or primary education. (200 words)

In this paragraph you need to:

  • Provide a specific example of how your chosen historical event from Part A could be taught in either an Early Childhood or Primary School setting. Your examples need to be clear and authentic and supported by literature (unit readings and wider research).
  • You may like to support your examples with reference to Indigenous pedagogies. ( 8 Ways Of Learning, Possum pedagogy ect)

Paragraph 6: Conclusion (<200 words)

  • A conclusion ties together the key points contained in your body paragraphs without repeating them. A conclusion finishes with a strong statement that indicates what more needs to be done. Your conclusion needs to summarise the key points you have discussed in both Part A and Part B.

Criteria 4:Composition of your essay

Criteria 4 is about the execution of your essay as a whole. To succeed in this criteria you need to address the following domains:

  • Use an essay structure including an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs and conclusion paragraph.
  • Consistent and accurate use of APA 7th Edition referencingLinks to an external site.. This means you have used in-text citations and have a reference list at the end of your essay that conforms to the APA style.
  • Spelling, grammar and academic expression (diction, tone and precision)
  • Please be mindful to use the correct terminology.

When discussing how you will teach your event remember to think about how Indigenous pedagogies can inform our teaching practices and enhance education. We want to try and teach the event in a way that embodies an anti-racist approach and provides equity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
