Task: To complete this assignment, you will:
- Select a local, national, or international problem/issue that you feel needs to change.
- I suggest selecting something that you are passionate about and would actually like to make an impact on.
- While you have some freedom in the parameters of your focus. Be careful of going too broad.
- For example, the National Immigrant Justice Center piece focused specifically on the detention centers, a specific aspect of the Immigration discussion.
- Complete some credible news research, using the tools discussed in our activities.
- Going directly to credible sites is often the most efficient way to access relevant credible material.
- You will need to include at least 1 quote from a credible news source
- Use the conventions observed in our mentor texts to craft your own manifesto
- Make sure that you are clearly following the conventions including a persuasive preamble and clear distinct steps/demands for action.
- Refer to our mentor texts, class activities, and samples to help guide you, as you create a new piece.
- As you develop your piece, you will want to use both credible news research along with the humanized narrative approaches that we discussed in our last assignment.
- You are welcome to incorporate personal experiences, stories from family and friends, or personalized stories from your research.
- You will need to quote and cite at least one source
- You will need to include at least one narrative
- Note: this is a manifesto and not a traditional 5 paragraph essay, so be careful of falling back into the same old essay format. We are challenging ourselves to engage in new forms of writing, new genres, and real world pieces, which ultimately will help us become more adaptable writers.
- Your final piece will be 4 pages (1600 words) long and in MLA format.
An Outstanding Manifesto Will:
- Fully develop the issue and why it’s important
- Specifically engage a targeted audience, using emotion, logic, and significant information.
- Establish credibility through trustworthy materials and information
- Call the reader to action. Prompt them to create change
- Provide a clear list of actions
