In your own words explain what these terms mean?  How did Renaissance artists used light by incorporating these two techniques?  Use two specific examples in which the artists deliberately use these techniques.  What did the artist achieve?  Try using examples outside your text book.

  • Qualities of Line
Look closely at Vincent van Gogh’s works, The Starry Night and The Sower and compare them to that of Jacques Louis David’s The Death of Socrates.   How are the qualities of lines which these two artists used are different?  What does each of these paintings portray, what is the subject matter?  And, finally discuss how these two artists create their compositions?  Hint:  you’d need to discuss how the two artists either use their emotions or logic and rational to paint.
  • Qualities of Space

For this discussion, I’d like you to choose one image from Ch. 5 on Space and discuss how the artist has created and portrayed a sense of depth and represent space or lack of it in his/her work.  You should discuss the technique used, for example, if you choose Henri Matisee, Harmony in Red, your response must include the flatness of his painting and the incorporation of vibrant colors and solid, clearly defined masses and forms which draw the viewer in.
