Toulmin Structure
Para 1- introduce your topic with thesis statement.
- Claim state your thesis- main opinion that can be supported by logic and evidence.
Para 2- Provide Evidence and data provide accurate statistics, quotes, and events that support your claim.
Para 3- Warrant explain the importance of this evidence. Make relevant inferences based on the evidence.
Para 4- Rebuttal- provide evidence that supports the counterclaim.
Para 5- Refute/ discredit your opponent’s counter arguments Rebuttal by attacking the credibility of their evidence.
Para 6- Conclusion and Concession acknowledge that your opponent has several valid points. Restate the value of your thesis.
Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:
· Introduction and claim, Background, Body, and Conclusion.
Within the body of your Rogerian essay, make sure to include the following in any order:
· The background for your chosen topic.
· The opposition – use an academic tone, and do not show bias.
· The strengths and weaknesses of your opponents claim.
· Strong, scholarly research
· Your claim – use an academic tone, and do not show bias.
· Discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground.
– Show the common ground between your opponents claim and your claim.
OBS:Make sure your paper is in the APA writing format (7th edition). 1200 words. Please include in-text citations (one per paragraph including introduction and conclusion), and four outside sources. Please note your cover page and list of references will not be counted as one of the 5 pages( so at least 6 pages with your reference list).
