The Basics for the Two Essays
1. Each essay should be five pages (a paragraph more or less is fine, but the standard is
5).
2. Double spaced, 12-point font
3. Standard margins—Approximately 1.25 on left and right margins and 1 on top and
bottom
4. For each day the paper is late, you will be docked three percentage points in you
paper grade (e.g. from an 87% to 84%)
5. In crafting your paper, you will want to construct a clear thesis and draw on evidence
from course readings, lectures, audio and video clips, etc. The more specific
evidence from the class resources you can muster in support of your argument,
the better your grade. A well-argued essay, with no evidence to back up your
answer to the question, will earn you a “C” at best. A bundle of evidence
without a clear answer to the question will put you in much the same
predicament.
6. For these essays, refer only to sources that are listed on the syllabus or presented in
lecture—no outside sources.
Main Task:
Write a thesis-driven argument supported by evidence that analyzes the causes of the period of
expansion described below.
Essential Information:
Economic historians Robert L. Heilbroner and William Milberg describe the period between
1945 and 1973 in U.S. economic history as “one of fast economic growth—indeed, among the
fastest of any in the history of the world. As a result, the period became known as the ‘Golden
Age” of capitalism.” (CP 65). Paul Krugman adds that the US in the years after WWII “was a
middle-class society to a far greater extent than it had been in the 1920s—or than it is today.”
(CP 55 ). Looking back to the period between the WWII and 1973, what factors, do you think,
explain what brought this period of sustained prosperity about.
