The second half of the course will be dedicated to problem solving, with a specific emphasis on Problem-Oriented Policing (POP), evidence-based practices, and evaluations of policing initiatives. This will include CPTED and Situational Crime Prevention methods used to modify the environment for the purpose of increasing risk and preventing crime. This project will involve an assessment of a location of your choosing, and proposed CPTED and Situational Crime Prevention techniques to tackle crime and disorder issues.
The assignment:
- Select a location of your choosing – MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, CA
- DO NOT place yourself at risk –you can use web-based photos versus taking a picture yourself
- Describe this location, and why you feel it is conducive to crime/disorder
- Detailed discussion – describe the site, the layout, and the features/issues you will be addressing
- What are the possible outcomes if this location is not addressed?
- Is there high crime in this area? Does it generate fear?
- Recommend five modifications using CPTED and/or SCP principles and techniques (use the categories, such as extend guardianship, and look at the examples to guide you – adapt to your specific location)
- Why did you choose these techniques?
- How will these techniques reduce opportunity and increase risk, for example?
- Who are the stakeholders you would collaborate with to make these changes?
- 3 pages double-spaced (narrative, not a bulleted list), APA format, with references (sources should include 25 Techniques | ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing | ASULinks to an external site. as well as any pictures from the internet, and news/media mentions (optional))
