Sometimes referred to as the “Day That Changed America,” September 11, 2001, is one of those days that people who lived through it will never forget where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. Some of you may remember that day clearly; others may have no memory because you were too young or perhaps not even born yet.
For this assignment, you gather information about “9/11” and then analyze it with an eye toward how it affected those close to you. Finally, you reflect on why it is important to study history and why it is important to remember September 11, 2001, specifically.
Step 1
Watch the “9/11 Inside the Pentagon: Full Program” on the Required Readings and Resources page. Take notes about the timeline of events that happened that day.
Step 2
Interview three friends or family about their memories from that day. You must interview one person from each of the following generations:
- Baby Boomer (born 1946-1964)
- Generation X (born 1965-1980)
- Millennial (born 1981-1996)
- You may not interview someone with little or no memory of the event.
The following questions are suggestions, but you may ask your own questions to complete this assignment.
- Where were you when you heard about the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center?
- What were your initial feelings about this?
- What did you think when you heard another plane crashed into the second tower?
- Describe how you felt hearing about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon and a fourth plane had crashed in Pennsylvania.
- What was it like in the days and weeks after 9/11? How did life change?
- What do you think were the long-lasting effects of 9/11 on the United States and worldwide?
- Do you think it’s important for Americans to remember 9/11? Why or why not?
Step 3
Write an essay with the following outline:
- One fully-developed paragraph with an introduction to September 11, 2001.
- One fully-developed paragraph summary of the first interview – use only one or two quotes from the person.
- One fully-developed paragraph of the second interview – use only one or two quotes from the person.
- One fully-developed paragraph summary of the third interview – use only one or two quotes from the person.
- One fully-developed paragraph analysis of how the events of 9/11 changed the lives of Americans.
- One fully-developed paragraph answering the following questions:
-
- How has this assignment changed your understanding of 9/11?
- How important the events of 9/11 are in our global history?
- Why do you think it is important for Americans to remember 9/11?
Remember that a fully developed paragraph consists of a topic sentence that explains what the paragraph is about. Then 3-4 sentences supporting the topic sentence and adding more detail. Finally, a sentence that summarizes the topic or adds one final piece of support.
Essay requirements
-
Your essay should be at least six paragraphs but can be up to 9 paragraphs. Cite all of your external sources, however, according to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (n.d.):
Any communication that cannot be directly retrieved by a reader is considered “personal communication.” Emails, phone conversations, text messages, and social media messages are all examples of personal communication. You do not include personal communication in your reference list; instead, parenthetically cite the communicator’s name, the phrase “personal communication,” and the date of the communication in your main text only.
(E. Robbins, personal communication, January 4, 2019).
This applies to personal interviews as well. Use the above personal communication example citation in the text of your essay only. You do not need to add it to your references list.
- Use at least one source of information outside the course materials (text and other required readings).
- You cannot collaborate with other students for this assignment. Also, you cannot use Generative or Artificial Intelligence, such as ChatGPT, Bard, Copilot, or Jasper, or Peer-to-peer “homework” sharing sites like Quizlet and Course Hero.
- Use in-text citations and include a reference page in APA format. If you need help with APA, use the resources on the FSCJ Online Student Resources page in the Start Here module.
