Detailed understanding of the concepts and approaches that underpin Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and marine conservation.
Identification and Critical Analysis of Conservation Principles, including the Effectiveness of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) as a Protection and Management Strategy
Critically evaluate and assess whether these concepts work in practice by illustrating your answer with effective and appropriate ‘real world’ case studies (Theme for this essay will be marine mammal migratory routes and the issues that need managing around those: shipping, offshore industry, noise pollution etc). Using 3 case studies: 1) The Celtic Sea (UK) for common dolphin and harbour porpoise (good case study for well integrated management, 2) The Barents Sea (Norway) for narhwals, belguas and bowhead whales (good topdown approach case study with limited stakeholder involvement), 3) The Bay of Bengal for a case study that lacks comprehensive MSP and frameworks. Please include the policy or acts that are also involved in these case studies eg UK Coastal act 2009 and EU habitats directive for the Celtic Sea.
- Critically discuss the development of marine policy nationally and internationally.
- Critically discuss the development of marine spatial planning nationally and internationally
- Assess the implications of national and international frameworks and policies for humankind’s use of coastal and marine resources
- Identify and critically discuss key marine conservation issues and the mechanisms employed to deal with them
- Identify and critically appraise the way marine conservation is undertaken in the UK and globally
- Understand and critically evaluate the frameworks, directives, policies, and initiatives in place to deal with marine conservation.
- Include a definition of MSP
- Include Olsen policy development cycle and sustainable development (agenda 21, chapter 17).
- Include what the coastal zone is and why the coastal zone needs management – cross sector disputes for different uses.
- Include First world conferance on National Parks 1962.
- Mention integrated coastal zone management.
