Research Proposal
The Proposal Topic is – What is the role of artificial intelligence in photography, and
how it impacts creativity, authenticity, and the definition of photography.
The document should be 1200-1500 words, double-spaced, and in 12-point font. In-text citation is required for any information that is not common knowledge. Your proposal should include all of the following sections (separated by the underlined headings below):
Paper and citations structured in APA.
Introduction
Provide a roadmap – Aim for this to be about 15% of your total proposal. Include:
- Provide some context for your research – what is important for your reader to know before you jump right in? This might include why this research is important, where there are gaps in research that you plan to address, etc.)
- Clearly state your objective for this proposed research – what are you attempting to accomplish or learn? Present 1-2 research question(s) that will guide your research.
- Aim for your research question(s) to be relevant, focused, able to be operationalized, and not something that has already been answered
- Briefly mention how you will answer these questions (what is the field site/community being researched, what are the methods being used)
Background
Engage with literature about your research topic and field site/community –– Aim for this to be about 20% of your total proposal. Include:
- Briefly overview what research has already been done relating to your research topic
- Briefly overview information about your proposed field site or community – you should demonstrate that you have the foundational knowledge to facilitate your research
- Briefly overview how the above elements impact/influence your research
Methodology
Present your research design – Aim for this to be about 30-35% of your total proposal. Include:
- Reiterate your research goal and question(s)
- What theoretical perspectives underpin this research?
- What is your field site or community you plan to research? How will you gain access to this site/community? What are you looking for in an informant? How will you find them? (Justify why this is a good site/community to research, how it relates back to your research question and goals)
- What type of data will you collect? What will be your method of data collection? (Justify why this is a good method and how it relates back to your research question and goals)
- What will be your method for analyzing your collected data? (Justify why this is a good method and how it relates back to your research question and goals)
Ethical Considerations
Discuss the potential impact of your research – Aim for this to be about 15-20% of your total proposal. Include:
- Do your research topics or methods pose any potential risks to those involved? Are there any expected benefits to those involved? What are these risks and benefits?
- What specific ways do you plan to ensure the safety and best interests of the community/site you are researching?
- How will you gather informed consent?
Impact of Research
Wrap up your proposal – Aim for this to be about 10-15% of your total proposal. Include:
- Reiterate the goal of this research and what can be learned from this research.
- How will what you learn positively contribute to academia or some other field?
- Why is it worthwhile to conduct this research? Why does it matter?
