Compose a two-to-three page (2-3) writing as directed below. You are responsible for the contents of either Hope Leslie, or,Times in Early New England or Coquette: The History of Eliza Wharton. Keep in mind that in this critical thinking assignment it is your educated opinion that is the central task.
Choose one (1) of the two texts listed above and write a book review of that text. A book review is a very specific type ofproject—it involves more than simply summarizing the contents of the book in question (btw, such an assignment is a book report). A book review includes critical analysis. For instance, one might comment on how historically reliable the text is, or there might be some explanation of how the text is understood today versus how it was perceived when it was written. Please refrain from comments such as “the book was hard to read” or “it had too many pages”, since comments such as these do not reflect a very deep level of explanation and analysis. In addition, do not read and/or include already published book reviews of these books in your work—doing so will result in a severe penalty, including but not limited to a “0” for the assignment and notification to the University Judicial Affairs Officer of plagiarism.
In making your arguments, you must provide examples from the texts for support. Rather than using formal footnotes/endnotes, follow these instructions. At the end of a citation–either a complete quotation or a paraphrase (putting the author’s ideas into your own words)—place the author’s name and the page numbers in parentheses. For example, a quotation: “I really like to teach history.” (Beirich, 21); a paraphrase: Some people like to teach history (Beirich, 21). These methods are used to teach you about the issue of plagiarism, and to show you that historians always try to attribute properly their sources. This is the idea: You cannot claim another’s ideas as your own. In addition, avoid quoting from the Introductions of the works. The information contained in them is provided as background material only. Make your arguments from the texts themselves–there is more than enough information present for you to make realistic conclusions about the works.
Your essay should use a standard format: 12 font, double spaced, and no more than a one-inch margin. Be sure to proofread your paper carefully; spelling, grammar, and other issues related to proper presentation and usage are a significant part of this assignment.
