Assessment # 4a Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Project: You will receive a grade once both parts of the CRPP have been completed

  • Choose the culture that most of your students are from (or your neighborhood children are from) that you are not familiar with and which is not your own culture.
    – Research 2 cultural traditions, such as values, food, communication styles, music, art, or other cultural artifacts from the identified culture.
    – Choose 1-2 areas from step 2 that you would focus on for this learning activity on. It should NOT involve a HOLIDAY ( It can involve, traditional clothing, flag, musical instruments, unique designs of that country, unique special food for that country alone) If you have another idea that is not on this list then please contact your instructor to get prior approval.IMPORTANT: This assignment is only supposed to focus in on 1-2 aspects of the culture. It is not to be an overview of many aspects of the culture in one Lesson. What I mean by that is that it shouldn’t be a lesson that includes – celebrating Mexican culture and it includes the flag, music, food, greetings, etc. That is not what is supposed to be done here. It can be one of those aspects or 2. For example: 3-4 traditional musical instruments learning about a particular unique food of the country Learning about the flag and its symbols It could involve 2 things such as a unique food and unique utensils of that country like chop sticks if you are doing something like a second grade lesson plan.

Part 1: The Demonstration of the CRPP.

This Assessment has options as to how the it can be completed. It is up to the Instructor to decide which one will be used based on the class format: Virtual or Live -In class or video upload

1) In class live lesson demonstration 2) Virtual- Zoom Lesson Demonstration 3) Video Recording

2) You must use an ANCHOR CHART for this lesson. (see the examples and information (here)and here)

3) Design a 15–20-minute group activity for Pre-K-2nd grade classroom. Choose one of those grades for the activity and identify the grade when you are starting your recording and state and/or show your Learning Objectives.

4) How the lesson will be demonstrated by Candidates: 1) An in class demonstration 2) A virtual Zoom Lesson Demonstration 3) A video recording. Those who are video recording need to do the following: Have someone record you or digitally video record yourself performing CRPP activity (exclude pointing the camera on the children in your classroom.) If you do not have access to children to complete this activity, video record the simulation of this activity. Be dramatic in voice, tone, etc. Ask questions and make up names of those responding by saying things like: ” Trevon- that was a good idea of what you thought it was, good prediction Melissa, nice job, etc.

– In the CRPP Video portion you will be doing the following:

What you will be doing is having a large group meeting where you do your fun Hook activity… like a mystery box, dress up, etc. Then you will pretend to go into another place for the main activity.

For those who are doing the Pre-K age with Learning Centers, all you need to do is one Learning Center activity (for example- Art) based of the Learning objectives and include the Anchor chart in the activity. All you need is one Learning Center and not 3. Older grades have only one main activity and will also utilize an anchor chart in the activity after the hook activity. To make it equitable you only need one Learning Center if you are doing Pre-K. The grade choice is Pre-K through 2nd grade.

5) In this CRPP demonstration you will need to demonstrate the following:

a) Utilize an Anchor chart as a main part of this CRPP (see the examples and information (here)and here)

b) State your 2 Learning Objectives– make sure they are concrete, observable, and measurable and that your second learning objective builds on what they were already exposed to in the first Learning Objective.

c) Start your lesson with the -Beginning of the Lesson / Introducing New Content/Skills- Warmup/Hook. IMPORTANT: Make sure the activities in the beginning of the lesson are designed to capture students’ attention, stimulate their thinking, and access prior knowledge. Also, make sure the Activities also allow for learners to relate the lesson’s goals and objectives to previous learning and to real-life experiences. You also need to be modeling during the demonstration (think- I do, we do, you do) and exhibit a positive attitude throughout the activity.

d) Main Activity- In your main activity you will work on your 2 Learning objectives with hands on activities utilizing many materials including your Anchor chart. You also need to be modeling during the demonstration (think- I do, we do, you do) and exhibit a positive attitude throughout the activity.

e) Differentiated Instruction- Demonstrate at least 2 ways to Differentiate Instruction (DI) for Special Needs children and at least 2 ways to Differentiate Instruction (DI) for English Language Learners (ELL) with developmentally appropriate materials.

e) 2 Learning Objectives- Also be careful about writing Learning objectives. Make sure that they are concrete, observable, and measurable and that objective 2 builds on objective 1 and that it is not students will create their own Irish soda bread for example. That is not a measurable objective.

f) Beginning of the Lesson / Introducing New Content/Skills- Warmup/Hook

g) Main Learning Activities

h) Differentiated Instruction for both Special Needs Learners & English Language Learners.
