According to this perspective, everything we do is based on getting our genes to survive. Evidence of this is that in all age categories males apparently look to date younger (than their age group) and more fertile females EXCEPT adolescent males who prefer to date older, more fertile females. Researchers (Trivers, 1985; Buss, 1999) have suggested that despite having the same evolutionary goal (having their genes survive), human males and females have different mating strategies. A promiscuous man can mate with many women and father many offspring without investing much effort in either. While a smaller percentage of the offspring may survive due to lack of paternal support, many of them will, thus allowing their evolutionary goal to be achieved. Such a male’s genes would then become more common in future generations. Females are limited in regard to how many offspring they can produce thus to achieve their evolutionary goal they look to establish a safe haven for their offspring and thus look for a financially stable male to help in this regard.
