Scene Study For Mother Courage (Rewrite a Scene bringing the action and dialogue of the scene into a new setting or dialect) and Write an Analysis. Consider Brecht’s ideas on Epic theater and Gestus as you plan your performance.

There are two parts to this assignment:

1.) It’s a creative assignment where you can choose a scene from Mother Courage and rewrite it bringing the action and dialogue of the scene into a new setting or dialect. You can choose a scene you want but please don’t choose a really short scene. Consider Brecht’s ideas on Epic theater and Gestus as you plan your performance!!

2.) Write an analysis paper (at least two pages). Includes an explanation of your contribution to the planning of the scene performance. As you plan, take notes on staging, blocking, interpretation, and creative ideas and write a follow-up scene analysis paper–about two pages.

Consider the following as you plan and write:

  • What themes and issues do you want to highlight?

  • How do you want the audience to feel towards Mother Courage in this scene?

  • What elements of Epic Theater do you want to employ in this scene? Describe specifically how you would do this.

  • Do you think it is important for the audience to be aware of the political background against which the play was set? If so, how would you make the audience aware of this?

The further guidelines and rubric are attached.
