In the second part of the course, we have read two major novels that explore a wide range of themes and topics, many of which challenge established ideas about race, class, economic mobility, capitalism, globalization, identity, cultural critique, and social justice. Choose one of these novels-How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia or The Sellout-and write a paper exploring a key point of controversy within the text. Your paper should analyze how the novel revises established assumptions about two or three of its central themes. In your argument, explain what assumptions the novel critiques, what revised assumptions it presents, and evaluate the extent to which these redefined ideas can still be questioned from perspectives outside the novel.
Your essay should meet the following criteria:
- Approximately 1,500-2,000 words +
Annotated Bibliography - MLA style and format
- at least 3 scholarly sources
- a short explanation (150 words) of how you revised the first draft (to be included at the very end of the paper, after the Annotated Bibliography)
