Description of the NGO: Panzi Hospital
There are many non-governmental agencies (NGO’s) that operate in the DRC. Each of them serves a specific function that is unique to the problems that exist in the DRC. To assist in the lack of healthcare available to the Democratic Republic of Congo people, Panzi Hospital (https://panzifoundation.org) is a renowned medical facility located in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo and its primary focus is on treating survivors of sexual violence, especially cases where it happened due to conflict. Was founded by Dr. Denis Mukwege, a renowned Ghana logical surgeon and noble peace prize laureate.
Panzi Foundation & Hospital is dedicated to healing survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and creating lasting change in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege and with a DRC-based team of nearly 1000 people, the Panzi Foundation stands as a beacon of resilience and change. As one of the largest African-led nonprofits, Panzi is deeply rooted in the local communities it serves, committed to addressing the devastating impacts of SGBV through a holistic, survivor-centered approach.
Panzi Hospital has been operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1999 and has helped over 83,000 survivors of sexual violence and treated more than 26,000 women with complex gynecological injuries. They do this by providing holistic care and community outreach. They also provide psychosocial support, legal assistance, and socioeconomic empowerment to ensure the survivors can gain their dignity and rebuild their lives.
