What are the effects of climate change and pollution on the Great Barrier Reef—and who is responsible for protecting it?

My final project will investigate the Great Barrier Reef’s environmental and political crisis, focusing on climate change and pollution effects on the reef. My central research question is: What are the effects of climate change and pollution on the Great Barrier Reef—and who is responsible for protecting it? This topic combines environmental science with tourism and public policy into a complex issue that I believe deserves more attention. This research topic interested me because I grew up on an island where the ocean meant everything to me. I became interested in marine ecosystems at a young age and wanted to learn more about climate change and how it affects our planet. The Great Barrier Reef is one of Earth’s most iconic and diverse ecosystems, yet it suffers from rapid destruction right before our eyes. The responsibility for this environmental damage to the reef interests me because it questions how this environmental damage extends beyond governments and industries to include Indigenous communities who have traditionally defended these regions. Studying this subject enables people to understand how collective efforts can protect the environment.
