Question: Analyze the theme of alienation in The Trial. What commentary does The Trial make about the human condition in modern society? How is this exemplified through the use of symbolism in the narrative.

Research focus:

  1. Psychological analysis: Research consequences of alienation on the psyche.
  2. Philosophical analysis: Research the philosophy of Existentialism and its discussions of alienation. Focus on the existential problems of alienation. Paper #4 must incorporate 3-4 scholarly sources (excluding the primary source). All of these sources need to come from the Rutgers Library Database.

OUTLINE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER #4

Your outline should take the following form. The idea is that this outline is the only thing in front of you when writing your draft.

Thesis statement that makes a clear argument connecting an idea from The Trial with the issues from the research and provides a map of your argument that lays out the topics you’ll be writing about. If you’re lost, think about the question you are responding to.

Topic Sentence #1 [Write out a focused topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph and reflects the main argument in some way.]

  • Evidence #1 from your research with the proper in-text citation (Jacobs).
  • Evidence #2 from your research with in-text citation. (This can be from the same source or a different one.)
  • Quote #1 from The Trial with in-text citation
  • Quote #2 #2 from The Trial
  • [You can order the research and The Trial evidence however it makes sense to you.]

REPEAT the above so that you have three or more topic sentences with the corresponding evidence. Each topic should contain at least one quote from The Trial (You must quote from the second half of the novel), since the novel remains the primary source for the paper. However, keep in mind that you can split up a topic into more than one paragraph.

Also attach your Works Cited with an annotated bibliography.

REMINDER: You must incorporate into your outline/paper the 3-4 sources you researched; all of these sources need to come from the Rutgers Library Database.

Please put your best effort into completing this outline thoroughly. It will make writing your paper so much easier.

Annotated Bibliography Instructions

An annotated bibliography is basically a Works Cited page with a paragraph that summarizes, or “annotates,” each source underneath the citation. You may have to submit an annotated bibliography in upper-level classes to show your research, summarize the sources, and explain how you will use the sources. For the writer, it’s an effective tool to understand your research and ensure that it is relevant to your topic. You will do this for the 3-4 sources you find along with The Trial. Here are the rules to keep in mind:

  1. You must use the correct MLA guidelines when writing the citation. As always, use Purdue Owl Links to an external site.for the right way to do it.
  2. You must include two paragraphs per source: the summary of the source (in your own words), and the explanation of how you will use the source to prove your argument.
  3. Like a Works Cited page, the sources need to be in alphabetical order.
  4. Your annotated bibliography needs to include your 3-4 sources and The Trial (in other words, every source that you will use in your paper).

Here is an example of how you do a single source…

The author discusses the ways in which the book industry has been affected by the current pandemic. While Americans are reading more during the quarantine, book sales are down, and independent bookstores and book festivals have struggled due to social distancing orders. With Amazon restricting its purchases from publishers, booksellers have had to get creative in how they get their product to customers. Many booksellers argue that bookstores should remain open because they are vital. [At least four sentences.]

I could use this article to prove that…. The author’s idea that… supports The Trial’s

idea that…. [Aim for at least three sentences.]

[Yours will contain at least four of these entries. You must also do one for The Trial.]
