The Headscarf Ban in Turkey (1980s–2007): Conflicts Between State-Led Modernization and Rising Religious Populism

Main topic: Idea of Secularism/Laicism, secularist reforms and use of Islam within political sphere in Ottoman Empire and/or Turkey with respect to modernization, westernization, and populism and its social and political effects on Ottoman Empire and/or Turkey during 1789 till 2007.

If you do not cover the topic in the way that you suggested in the title or topic choice it will lead to deduction of points based on content. • You have to use at least ONE of the assigned readings in the syllabus. • You have to use at least TWO academic sources outside the syllabus. (Academic sources are books and/or academic articles published in academic journals.) • All your sources/references have to be provided as in-text citations and as references in your Research Assignment Essay. If you do not provide in text citations and references for all your sources points will be deducted. • You should have a clear knowledge of the sources you use within your research assignment essay and present them correctly within the essay as references and in-text citations. • You can use other materials such as documentaries, newspaper articles or magazine articles and etc. Yet they are not considered as academic sources. But they should be presented as in-text citations and references. • All your sources should be available as pdf’s of books or as direct links which can be provided if they are asked for. Not providing your sources when they are asked for will lead to deduction of points. • If you are using direct quotations from your sources the direct quotations can not be more than 20% of your assignment. • WIKIPEDIA CAN NOT BE USED AS A SOURCE.
