Essay 2 Prompt
Required Readings:
- Introduction to Teaching to Trangress by bell hooks
- Chapter 2 of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire
- from Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum by Jean Anyon
Respond to the following prompt in a clear and coherent essay of at
least 4 and a half pages. Remember to include a controlling thesis
statement that answers the essential question asked by the prompt. Write
an introduction and clear topic sentences that support your thesis. In
your essay, use quotes from at least two of the required readings.
Remember to format your essay according to the MLA and include a works
cited page.
We have read and discussed various essays and articles that analyze
teaching methods and curriculum. Through these readings, we have learned
how education can liberate and embolden individuals. Use the ideas we
have discussed to respond to the following prompt:
- What is necessary for students to grow in a classroom? Why? For
this question, think about the theories and ideas we have discussed.
Support your claims using quotations and explain the rationale for the
pedagogy and curriculum you suggest.
Guidelines
In your introduction:
- Hook your reader.
- Introduce each reading, its author, and summarize the main points.
- Your thesis must answer the prompt question and provide rationale that you can support in your body paragraphs.
In each body paragraph:
- Your topic sentences must focus on one specific point that supports your thesis.
- You must cite at least one quotation. Be sure to use the passage to
clarify or support your explanation, linking it back to the topic
sentence. When you cite, be sure to give appropriate context and to
provide a signal phrase and a citation. - Break down the passage and explain how it supports your thesis and topic sentence.
In your conclusion:
- Along with summing up your points, explain your experience in the classroom. How have you learned best and why?
