LITERARY essay (close reading) of “The Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James on the theme of Aestheticism

Literary Essay on “The Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James on the theme of Aestheticism

Professor Instructions: Students will write a graded paper between 16–18 pages in length.

You are required to devise your own topic for your graded paper, but I must validate that topic before you begin your essay. To this end, all students will need to send me an outline. Your outline should be around 2-3 pages in length and should consist of the following: a title; an overview of your argument (including a thesis statement); a selection of passages that you plan to close read to develop your argument; and an annotated bibliography of any secondary criticism that you will draw upon to enrich your argument. Your argument should be structured around close readings of a small selection of passages from The Portrait of a Lady, graded papers need to show a meaningful engagement with at least three different works of secondary criticism.

I have added a word document (Brushstrokes of Identity) with the outline. Please use that outline to write the essay and do not change it, as it was already validated by my professor. In the outline you will find: the title of my essay, what my essay plans to analyse/show, my thesis statement, a plan of my essay with the corresponding passages to close read for each point, and the bibliography of secondary critism. I have also added the pdfs of all of the secondary criticism. Please use only the passages from the book and the secondary criticism that I have selected (Michael Gorra, Jonathan Freedman, Robert Pippin), as I cannot use anything that was not previously validated by my professor. Thank you!
