Two summers ago, I volunteered with my Church to drive 10 hours to New Orleans, Louisiana, and rebuild neighborhoods effected by the natural disaster day by day. We were there for two weeks, and some of the things we took time to do included spending valuable time with the young children and families of the neighborhood church, feeding and mentoring the homeless on the streets of New Orleans with water, snacks, bibles, and so on. As I am sure you know, the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina set New Orleans back tremendously, and people today are still affected by it and live in poverty simply because of one hurricane natural disaster. This was a life changing experience and brought me closer to my surroundings and people within my church. It made me realize that I was so extremely lucky to live in Georgia, and not have to worry where my next meal, or shower was coming from.
