In this paper, I want you to examine James Joyce’s short story “The Dead”, which is the last story in Dubliners. In particular, please look at how the ending of the story changes the way a reader thinks about Gabriel. Through the whole story we’ve seen things mostly through Gabriel’s point of view. What happens at the end to shift that point of view? How does it change the story for the reader? Do we see other characters’ points of view elsewhere in the story? Do we feel differently about Gabriel at the end of the story?
