Module 1 Worksheet: Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice: Basic Concepts & Ethics

A fundamental goal of this assignment is to show you that nursing research has relevance to you. We want you to appreciate that nursing research is not just for an academic audience; it is for any nurse who wants to solve problems or answer questions in a systematic way. It is also for practicing nurses who evaluate whether study results should be used in their clinical practice. Additionally, some of the ethical issues surrounding research will be considered.

  1. Identify a sacred cow that you use in your practice.  Now try to track back to identify its source. Was it tradition (“This is the way it’s always been done”)? Authority (“Dr. So-and-so said so”)? Or systematic research (“An empirical study discovered this to be the case”)?
  2. Consider the sacred cow example you provided. How do you think you might go about changing it?

Part II – Ethics

Please watch the video The Tuskegee Study and read Chapter 2 of your textbook. Use the assigned textbook reading to support your answers to all questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afwK2CVpc9E
