Discussion response how attitudes towards certain groups of people influence the care they receive

Nurses’ attitude towards caring for prisoners will significantly impact colorectal screening. Nurse partitioners attitudes can vary from positive, indifferent and or negative. If the Nurse Practioner is positive, they will view their prisoner as they would any other patient. They would actively promote and educate prisoners about the importance of colorectal screening, encourage them to undergo it, and prove support throughout the process (Thompson et al., 2019).

If the Nurse Practioner has a negative outcome there will not be any advocating for prisoners to get care. This would lead to lower rates of participation and missed opportunities for early detection and treatment for colorectal cancer among prisoners (Thompson et al., 2019). Nurse practioners should be non-judgmental and have a patient centered approach when caring for prisoners.

This study examined providers’ attitudes, beliefs, perceived barriers, and preferred screening methods regarding CRC screening at community health centers. Based on a descriptive analysis, our surveys found that (1) providers’ belief in the effectiveness of FIT testing as a CRC screening procedure generally increased during the baseline to follow-up period; (2) changes in provider perception of key barriers, specifically not having systems to identify those who need to be screened, reflect an increase in provider awareness of such systems; and (3) use of EMR tools for CRC screening increased during this time (Zucker et al., 2022 pg. 4)
