1. Take the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule:

2. Read the following short articles:

NOW, reflect on your own assertiveness (or lack thereof). Where do you score on the Rathus schedule? Were you surprised about your score? How do you think people perceive you (e.g. do they perceive you to be assertive, aggressive, passive…) – and how do you think societal norms and expectations (about race and gender perhaps) have shaped your particular style of assertiveness (or lack thereof).

Consider what this means for you as you move forward in your social work career – both in how it impacts your ability to present in an interview/secure a job and how it impacts you in the workplace long-term. Where do you foresee a need for assertiveness? Do you think you’ll ever have to “dial back” your assertive or aggressive nature in the workplace?

Are you consistently “the same” in terms of how aggressive you are or are there different roles/areas of your life where you find that you have a different presentation of yourself? Why do you think that is? How do you learn from those different elements of your life?

How does this work related to assertiveness relate to the short readings for today on boundaries?
