Week 2 Assignment: Application of CACREP Accreditation Standards to Curriculum Design

This assignment is an initial opportunity to step into the role of a counselor educator with the application of the initial stages of curriculum design. You will review a graduate-level course description and determine at least four CACREP standards from Section 2. F: Professional Counseling Identity, Common Core Standards that could be integrated into the course curriculum.

The steps for this assignment are:

  1. Select a course from the list below and review the description – BOLDED BELOW
  2. Review 2016 CACREP Standards, Section 2. F: Professional Counseling Identity, Common Core Standards. (There are eight common core areas, with the lettered standards under each area.)
  3. Identify a minimum of four standards that could be a good fit for the course’s curriculum. (You can choose from different areas). Be sure to cite the specific standards and codes in your submission.
  4. Your completed assignment should be 3–5 pages. Support your discussion throughout with references to peer-reviewed literature to demonstrate how that standard would be appropriate for that specific course. Provide the following:
    • Introduction. (What is CACREP? Why is it important? Why do we need to consider CACREP Standards during course design?)
    • 1–2 paragraphs of the rationale for each standard.
    • A conclusion. (What have you learned or gained from this exercise?).
  5. Use 3–5 current (within 5–7 years), primary scholarly resources to support your statements throughout. Peer-reviewed journal articles are best.
  6. Follow APA formatting guidelines for paper structure, organization (headings and subheadings), and reference citations. Avoid using direct quotations; it is best to summarize your understanding of these concepts in your own words.

Sample Course List

Human Sexuality: Learners in this course study sexuality within the broad context of human experience. Learners examine a systemic psychosexual approach to development across the lifespan and evaluate the functionality of sexual behavior in individuals, couples, and families. In addition, learners explore theory, assessment, treatments, and interventions for various issues associated with sexuality, as well as sexuality-related concerns of diverse populations. Throughout the course, learners are challenged to expand personal awareness of limitations and biases that could impact the therapeutic relationship.

Counseling and Advocacy With Diverse Populations: This course introduces theory and research related to culturally competent counseling and social justice advocacy. Learners consider the characteristics and concerns of diverse populations as they inform counseling and advocacy practices that promote optimal wellness and growth for individuals, couples, families, and groups. Learners also assess the influence of their own characteristics, attitudes, and beliefs on the counseling process; examine their roles in promoting social justice at multiple levels; and evaluate approaches for prevention of mental health issues in a multicultural society.

Ethical and Legal Issues in Professional Counseling: In this course, learners evaluate current legal and ethical guidelines used in the counseling profession. Learners apply decision-making models and formulate effective collaboration strategies used to resolve legal and ethical issues that arise when working with children, adults, couples, and families. Learners also analyze how personal belief systems influence counselors’ responses to those issues.

Crisis Assessment and Intervention: This course presents crisis intervention and emergency management models and strategies used in the counseling field. Learners focus on developing the crisis intervention skills needed to provide counseling services in mental health settings in a timely, effective, and ethical manner. Learners also explore other related topics, including working with situational crises, assessing suicide and other risks, and supporting the implementation of emergency management plans.

Principles of Psychopathology: Diagnosis and Treatment: Learners in this course examine psychopathology principles, professional literature, and current issues associated with assessing and treating mental disorders. Learners critically evaluate diagnostic models, methods, and approaches used in diagnosing and treating individuals, couples, and families.
