how might you explain systemic racism to a friend or family member who is skeptical of it?
1. What’s a systemic racism/ the history of it/ where it come from
a. The system is something that people talks about but don’t exactly know what goes into that or what exactly that means.
b. It’s hard to define it by one thing but “systemic racism refers to the processes and outcomes of racial inequality and inequity in life opportunities and treatment.” (R. Banaji1, 2021)
c. If I had to starts explaining that to family and friend, I would have start by the history and how it turned into a thing.
d. Race goes back to the colonial and continues until early independence, some amendments on the constitution was supposed to end slavery but that didn’t quite happen because black people did not have right voting rights and was still segregated. “From 1876 to 1900, 90% of all African Americans lived in the South and were subject to the dictates of the repressive Jim Crow system” (R. Banaji1, 2021)
e. Talk about the Jim crow laws and how in my history 1300 last semester we learned about that “These laws prohibited black people from being treated equally, having the same access and rights as white people. They lasted until desegregation laws were put into place in the 1960’s”
2. How covid/ George Floyd/ brought it back/ 2020 in general was a terrible year in that point of view
3. A personal Reflection on how it would affect people/ me and how I feel about it. I’m a 19-year college student athlete that’s international, from Brazil how it would affect me. How I have to use a different name for fear of someone mispronouncing it , my name is Letycia but I have to go by Lety because of it. talk about caitlin clark and angel reasse and how angel was misssterpretated while when clark did it it was okay so that was her being set up for failure because of her race and skin color thats one of the white priveligies happening. and how she was going thru Institutional racism which is more subtle, less visible, and less identifiable but no less destructive to human life and human dignity than individual acts of racism
