Also, you will conduct research by using the library databases to include peer/scholarly articles, to develop your analysis and to formulate a clear and persuasive   argument or thesis for the following question:

To what extent are students products of their environments, and what should be done to help students utilize their agency (a person’s will to act) to close the academic achievement gap?

  • Please read this question carefully. This assignment is not asking for a an agreement or disagreement that students are products of their environments. Please be sure to 1) Break Down the Prompt Carefully 2) Read the Prompt more than once 3) What is the focus of this questions?
  •  Additionally, providing background details and examples of products of environments is not what this question is asking. This is not what research addresses. Rather you must answer and make an argument (thesis) for the question in its totality. In other words, you are not breaking the question into parts and putting those parts into the essay.
  • For the First draft of this paper that is due this week (Week 4), you will include 2 peer/scholarly reviewed articles written in the last 10 years (nothing older than 2014) from the College Library Database to help support your claim. These sources will need to be Annotated.
  • Include an Annotated Bibliography     for the Draft and Final draft. Please seek support, and refer to the modules on how to construct an Annotated Bibliography.
  • Analyze as part of the pre-writing process, please be sure that you are making connections to the research conducted and the texts we have read this semester, especially the And Still We Rise Text. Please use evidence (minimal, starting with Chapters 5 an onward, nothing prior to Chapter 5. To be clear, please do not include evidence prior to Chapter 5. Everyone should have the book, as it is important for this Final Paper.
  • Please be careful here and similar to the prior essay you ARE NOT reviewing or breaking down the reading or your interview for this paper. These examples will only be used to support your argument, your analysis, your words, and your voice must dominate this paper and be supported with some evidence.
  • Completing peer/scholarly reviewed research takes time and experience with how to navigate the databases. Support from the Librarian is vital for this paper as well as the Instructor and Tutors.
