The assignment is to write a minimum 3 full page essay essay that analyzes one of the chapters from Panthers, Hulks and Iron hearts: Marvel, Diversity and the 21st Century Superhero. You may choose any chapter except the introduction.
You should focus on whether or not you feel the author has been successful in making his/her point. Your thesis should indicate your overall view of the article/essay. Please place the thesis at the end of the introduction. Your essay should address the following, which means you want a section devoted to each:
Introduction- introduces work being discussed by title and introduces the name the author, offers a brief summary, and ends in your thesis, which is your overall opinion of the work regarding the effectiveness of the work.
Audience- Who is the audience for the work? Give examples from the work to support your chosen audience. Consider the subject of the piece, the language that is used by the writer, and where it was published as criteria for determining and explaining who you feel is the author’s audience. Please do not write: “anyone could be the audience.” I encourage you to look at the introduction as well as the background of the editors.
Purpose-Why was the work written, produced, etc.? Give examples or quotes supporting what you have defined a purpose? Where is the purpose best seen or achieved? Refer directly to a place in the essay where you see this identified. What does the author want from you as a reader?
Author-What is the background of the author? You may have to do some independent research. Look up the author of the chapter.
Methods– What is used to achieve purpose? Does the author use statistics, personal interviews, historical facts, precedents, experiments, case studies, personal experience, examples etc? . How well do these methods work to achieve the purpose? Use specific examples from the essay. The methods section should be the longest part of your essay. You may want to devote a paragraph to each method.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Where is the work strongest? Why? Weakest? Remember, most works have areas that function well and areas that don’t. Specifically identify place sin the text and explain why you find them effective or ineffective.
Effectiveness: What is your overall opinion of the effectiveness of the work? Some portions of the work may have flaws. Don’t be afraid to point these out. Who would be interested in reading it? How does it contribute to the field of study? How does it compare to other works you may have encountered?
The thesis of your paper is very important: it can help you create a focused argument and give your reader a road map so she/he doesn’t get lost in the sea of points you are about to make.
