“Philosophy is a vast field. There are philosophies in different parts of the world; when we look
at the philosophical activity in a region, we find that in different periods people thought
differently about themselves and the world. Even if we take a particular period, we find
different approaches. What is more, we may find similar trends in different parts of the world.
Classification is one way for the human being to get a grip on reality (in this case the reality of
ways of reflecting about reality). In short classification is a way of coping with a variety of
different ways to give meaning to life and the world. We may compare such classifications to
maps which not only chart territories but, in doing so, help travellers to find their way. There
are therefore different approaches to and classifications of philosophical activity in Africa”
