Discussion Question for Placido and Goodfellas. Variety of biopics
- Reflect on the aesthetic form as a narrator technique in both Scimeca and Scorsese’s biopics. How would you compare these two stories and the ways through which they are presented to the viewers? What are the main characteristics that make them engaging, dark, expressive, or dissimilar? Realism and mob fascination? Storytelling or voiceover? Activism vs opportunism?
- In what ways Goodfellas, although praised for showing a more “realistic” and “grittier” depiction of the mob, still suggests a romanticization of mob life and a male dominant society?
- Pick TWO scenes, one per each film and compare them to support your argument. Include a quote by Cerro and Orsitto.

Discussion Question for Suburra: Blood on Rome and Sopranos symbolic spaces
- Characters and Spaces. In what ways we can compare the spaces and places described and narrated in Suburra to previous Tv series or films, specifically The Sopranos? How are characters similarly depicted as criminals while also being projected differently in their attitudes/motives? Reflect also on the journey to Naples in the Sopranos 2.04 Commendatori. How are spaces impacting our perceptions of the characters in terms of culture, justice, redemption, ethnicity or gender? You may also reflect on the significance of spaces and how our protagonists inhabit these locations, pass by, and transform them. Are there any elements that shocked you or left you confused as viewers or intrigued you?

Discussion Questions for A Chiara
For this last reflection post, I provided the themes we discussed in class on Fridays. Please pick the category you find most interesting and provide your interpretation/thesis on its function in the narrative.
Integrate the theme with ONE scene analysis (not the car explosion, the opening, or the finale) in which you discuss and analyze cinematic aspects (techniques, camera, mise-en-scene, sound, focus…) to explore Chiara more in-depth. Guiding questions: How is Chiara presented to us? How does she navigate the whirlwind of emotions and ambivalence? Does she have agency? Does she remind you of previous strong female characters in Mafia movies?
1)Cinematography and Technical Strategies —- THE RUN, the Handheld camera, lighting, etc…
2)Unique sounds and use of silence — the bombing, hiding, the gym?
3)Spatial symbolism β places to be and places to avoid, hiding and resisting
4)Allegiance and Alignment — How can we dissect the personalities of the bad guys? What type of masculinity do they exhibit? Do they resemble previous mobsters?
5) Families’ birthday dinners and dialogues, contrasting feelings
6)Meta/reflections —- role of Antonio, the fight with the Roma community, the quest for justice….
Note to follow the instructions and let me know if you need anything also please focus on the details and get what the exact requested sources along with this i would like to inform you that you will need to reply to 2 peers for the 3 reflections but after you finish i will provide them to you so that you response .
