2,000-2,500 word reflective essay: Summarizing how you will conceptualize your approach to counselling as a counsellor

The paper should address your basic assumptions about humankind and mental illness, your ideas on the purpose of counselling, an explanation of your theory of counselling, and your role as a counsellor. Because this is not an applied course, the paper should mainly focus on your theoretical approach to counselling, rather than on specific techniques and demonstrate the following: • Ability to critically reflect on motivation to enter the field; • Critical appraisal of the proposed approach – Evidence of critical evaluation of the effectiveness of the chosen approach, and appropriate suggestions for improving your personal approach; • Approach to therapy is coherent with student’s application – Critical illustration of how clients’ problems originate and how they are best helped; • Student shows originality; • Structure and presentation of the coursework are effective; and • Correct referencing style is followed – The work is supported with evidence-based research, and the referencing style is correctly followed (APA Style).What do I need to do in order to do well:1. Knowledge and Understanding: Do you fully understand the purpose of the assessment and that you can take the relevant topics/areas you have learnt in your module to formulate your answer? 2. Depth of Reflection: Are you able to demonstrate depth of thought, level of self-awareness and personal insight into how your concept of self, beliefs, attitudes and experiences will impact upon your work as a counselling psychologist? 3. Language Use: Can you use language that is engaging, with a sense of ‘voice’, awareness of audience and purpose, and demonstrate the ability vary sentence structure? 4. Use of evidence and referencing: Are you able to use relevant examples from the texts studies to support claims in your own writing, making applicable connections between texts? 5. Appropriate referencing: Can you follow a consistent referencing style that uniquely identifies the references in question, and is presented in a sensible and organised manner?1. Use typical formatting (double spaced, font 11). It would be useful to use a cover page for your essay that had the brief on it. Guidance on Paper Format 1. Introduction • Reflect on your motivation for becoming a counsellor/psychotherapist 2. Explore your unique life experiences • (who, what, etc.) that influenced your decision to potentially enter the field of counselling/psychotherapy 3. My Personal Approach To Counselling • Name and describe existing theoretical orientations from which your personal theory comes (e.g., Client-­­centred, Existential, Cognitive-­­ Behavioural, Psychoanalytic, ACT, DBT, CAT, Gestalt, REBT, etc.). • Describe any multicultural considerations you will address through your personal theory in thinking about the client group or clients you would likely to work with. • Be specific about what elements of the existing theoretical orientations relate to your personal theory. You may select one theory or multiple theories; however, all elements must be supported and adequately referenced. • Describe any major assumptions; goals and objectives of therapy; client-­­ therapist relationships; techniques and application principles, etc. 4. How does the theory(s) reflect your personal values, convictions, etc.? • Describe what ethical considerations you will reflect on in working with the client groups or clients you would likely to work with. What are the safeguarding issues if you are working with children or young people? What if treatments are not congruent with cultural or religious beliefs? 5. How Client Problems Originate •From your theoretical position, describe how client problems originate. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your views. For example, do problems stem from client beliefs? The way people think? Feelings? Unconscious forces? Chemical imbalances in the brain? Issues related to family of origin? The way people view themselves, others, their lives? Be specific in your description and discussion. 6. How Clients Are Best Helped • Describe your view of how clients are best helped in the counselling process. This must be related to your personal perspective (e.g., “This is how I would approach working with clients . . .” “I would . . .” etc.). Be specific with techniques and interventions and justify your rationale.
