Getting Started
Social workers must understand developmental, cultural, social, and environmental factors; and be knowledgeable about evidence-based practices as they collect information, develop mutually agreed upon goals, and critically choose and implement intervention strategies. When working with diverse clients, it is very important that social workers consider the cultural identity of their clients so that their assessment approaches and chosen interventions are culturally appropriate. The Hispanic/Latinx population is currently the fastest growing minority group in our country. However, they are also a vulnerable population facing significant barriers, so social workers should be prepared to offer culturally competent services to this community. In the resources for this assignment, you are provided with material related to the Hispanic/Latinx population, social work assessment, specific culturally relevant assessment tools, and culturally appropriate interventions. You will use these resources to explore the assessment stage of social work practice with a Latinx family, and critically choose culturally appropriate intervention strategies for that same family.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate anti-racist and anti-oppressive social work practice at the individual, family, group, organizational, community, research, and policy levels; and
- Demonstrate cultural humility by applying critical reflection, self-awareness, and self- regulation to manage the influence of bias, power, privilege, and values in working with clients and constituencies, acknowledging them as experts of their own lived experiences.
- Apply theories of human behavior and person-in-environment, as well as other culturally responsive and interprofessional conceptual frameworks, when assessing clients and constituencies; and
- Demonstrate respect for client self-determination during the assessment process by collaborating with clients and constituencies in developing a mutually agreed-upon plan.
- Engage with clients and constituencies to critically choose and implement culturally responsive, evidence-informed interventions to achieve client and constituency goals.
- Incorporate culturally responsive methods to negotiate, mediate, and advocate with and on behalf of clients and constituencies.

- Read the following resources. You may also want to review supplemental resources listed above:
- There are two Latinx families featured in the video: Brenda’s family and Anais’ family, choose one of those families to focus on in this assignment. Pretend you are a social worker at the Community Mental Health Center featured in the video, and this family was referred to you by the group facilitator for family services as a follow up to their daughter’s group completion. Your job is to consider how you would approach a culturally responsive assessment and intervention plan with this family. Write a 5-6 page (not including title and reference pages) paper in APA format, that integrates a minimum of 3 scholarly sources and responds to the following prompts. Please note – you should use subheadings to organize your paper:
- ASSESSMENT (3 pages)
- Based on your reading, detail the information would you need to gather in your initial assessment with this family. You are welcome to structure this section as a bulleted list.
- Using the assessment parameters you listed above, analyze and summarize the information collected from the video by constructing an introduction to this family system. Be sure to include descriptive and identifying information, strengths, risk factors, and presenting problems.
- Identify the primary presenting problem for this family.
- Based on this primary problem, outline 1 mutually agreed upon goal and 2 objectives for this family’s treatment. These should be professionally written in SMART format, and remember, a client’s goals are what they want to accomplish or see change in their life as a result of treatment.
- INTERVENTION (2 pages)
- Download and review the List of Evidence Based Practices for Hispanic Families
- From this list, critically choose the intervention you feel is best suited to assist this family in meeting their agreed upon goal and objectives established above and then share your rationale. Be sure to support your rationale with sources.
- Based on the program you chose, outline an abbreviated intervention or service plan for this family. This plan should include action steps which state “who will do what, when.”
- REFLECTION (2 paragraphs)
- Finally, engage in critical self-reflection regarding this workshop’s content. Share insights gained about the Latinx population, and your own cultural lens.
- ASSESSMENT (3 pages)
- When you’ve completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor using the Activities button to access the assignment by the end of the workshop.
