Overview

At this point in the course, you have spent considerable time studying how Matthew portrays Jesus. It has been a central topic of class discussions and numerous other assignments in the course such as the worksheets and some forums. Before beginning this assignment, review the feedback from your instructor on the tentative thesis and outline assignment and on previous relevant assignments.

Instructions

Write a thesis driven essay discussing the portrayal of Jesus in Matthew.

Parameters and Additional Details

  • Your essay should be approximately 1500-2000 words (~7-8 pages) in length
  • The first draft of the essay is worth up to 30 points based on the overall quality of work. The final draft of the essay is worth up 150 points based on the overall quality of work
  • Be sure that your introduction includes a clear, specific, and nuanced claim about the portrayal of Jesus in Matthew. The body of your paper should explain and develop that claim with evidence and argumentation rooted in Matthew.
  • It will NOT be possible to discuss every single verse or story in Matthew. Do NOT try to develop a verse by verse summary. Instead, identify and describe the major motifs, themes, or big picture ideas in the story Matthew tells about Jesus. Develop your discussion of those motifs, themes, or big picture ideas with reference to some specific exemplary texts in Matthew.
  • Even as it is not possible to discuss everything in Matthew, your claims should be attentive to and will be accountable to the entire story Matthew tells. Do not simply pick a few exemplary texts that support a simplistic claim about how Matthew portrays Jesus that could be challenged or undermined by other passages in Matthew. For instance, if you suggest something like Jesus is compassionate, be sure to attend to instances where Jesus appears less than compassionate.
  • After completing the first draft of the paper, you will be required to visit a writing tutor in the Academic Success Center to help develop your work. Students will be required to sign up to visit a writing tutor in either week 8, 9, or 10 of the course. Failing to visit an ASC writing tutor with a draft of your paper will result in receiving a zero for assignment 11.2 in the course.
  • You are welcome to selectively reuse your own work on previous assignments, including the first draft, in the course if they have been thoroughly and appropriately edited in light of feedback and the particular parameters of the new assignment. Do not simply copy/paste things you have written previously.

  • Your essay must engage at least any two required readings from the course other than the Bible.
  • Your essay must engage at least one essay from the Texts @ Contexts volume that was NOT required.
