A Comparative Essay on “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker and “A Family Supper” by Kazuo Ishiguru

  • Develop a narrowly-defined argumentative thesis related to a comparison of some aspect, or aspects, of two of the short stories we have read.
  • Write a paper of 650-700 words.
  • Two (2) outside sources are to be used for this paper, which should supplement your own critical and analytical thinking.
  • Follow APA style throughout your paper; see samples posted on Canvas
  • Your paper should consist of five (5) to six (6) paragraphs:
  1. An introduction with a hook that leads into your thesis
  2. Well-developed body paragraphs which include topic sentences (claims) that guide your writing and the reader, evidence from the texts, and your analysis
  3. A conclusion that restates your thesis without rewriting it and offers an insight based upon your analysis of the texts.
  • Give your paper a creative, interesting title.
  • Include a References page that includes the two short stories and your outside sources
  • Combine paraphrase, summary, and quotation with your own interpretation, weaving quotations smoothly into your paper.
  • Avoid unnecessary plot summary. Your goal is to argue a thesis and to support that argument with pertinent details from the work itself (to include brief summaries of key plot details as well as direct quotations). When plot development supports a point you want to make, then a very brief summary is acceptable. But plot summary alone is NO substitute for analysis.
  • When including direct quotations, please remember that it is your job to properly introduce the quotation (where does it occur in the general story, who is speaking?, etc.) and to also explain, IN DETAIL, why you think the quotation is important in relation to the point you are arguing at that moment in your essay. Be brave, and spend some time analyzing as well the actual language of the quotation.
