title: A Critical Evaluation of How and Why Terrorism Impacts Tourism in the Contemporary World
Learning outcomes being assessed:
This assignment assesses learning outcomes 1 and 2:
- Critically analyse the ways in which tourism is linked to, and affected by, broader economic, political, social, technological and cultural developments in contemporary societies;
- Critically evaluate the consequences and implications of tourism at a range of scales;
Rationale:
This assignment should demonstrate your ability to identify a key issue in contemporary tourism and present an argument about how and why this issue matters for contemporary tourism. In particular, you should demonstrate how tourism is connected to broader global events and contexts.
Please note the following points:
- Your essay should be 2000 words (plus or minus 10%). Marks will be deducted for essays which are too short or too long.
- Your essay must focus solely on one of the issues covered in the first part of this unit (i.e. the Covid pandemic, the cost of living crisis, ethics and tourism, women and tourism, overtourism, sustainable tourism, tourism and terrorism).
- Your essay should have a title along these lines: “Critically evaluate how and why [name of issue] matters for tourism in the contemporary world”.
- You essay should present a concise argument which identifies a number of reasons as to why you consider that your chosen issue matters for tourism.
- Your essay must be informed by relevant and recent academic debates (derived from books and journals).
- Your essay should be presented in a san-serif font (such as Calibri or Arial) with a font size of 11 or 12, and 1.5 spacing (this makes it easier to read when marking online).
- The word limit does not include references, figures, tables.
With reference to the issue that you have chosen…
…identify what you think are the most important reasons why this issue matters for contemporary tourism
(based on what we discuss in the lecture and on your own wider reading around the topic)
…and present an argument based on the reasons why you think this issue matters for tourism
We are not looking for a conventional essay which weighs up both sides of an argument
Instead, we are looking for your arguments about how and why your chosen issue is important (i.e. why it matters for tourism)**
We would expect this to be a one-sided essay in which you present your arguments and opinions
You should only focus on one issue covered in this unit
β But thereβs nothing wrong in linking to other issues on the course if itβs appropriate to do so But: it must be an issue covered in the first part of this unit
Your essay should be about the issue in general (not the issue in a specific destination or country)
Your essay should focus on the contemporary situation (so make sure any case studies or examples you use are fairly recent)
