“A Study of Healing Practices at the Intersection of Magic, Science, and Religion in Ancient Egypt”

Scholarly discussion of the interplay of magic, science, and religion has long existed; this is especially true when considering ancient societies like as Egypt. Numerous scholars have investigated the ways in which these components were integrated into daily life rather than being viewed as distinct fields, particularly when it came to issues with health and illness. For example, magical rituals were frequently employed as an adjunct to early medical knowledge, as documented by anthropologists and historians of religion like Mircea Eliade and Bronislaw Malinowski. In addition, researchers like Géraldine Pinch have examined the roles played by gods like Isis and Horus, who were important figures in both magic and medicine, in the religious rites related to healing. In this paper, I will explore the integration of magic, science, and religion in ancient Egyptian healing practices, focusing on how these three disciplines worked together to address health and disease. The combination of magic, science, and religion in ancient Egyptian healing methods will be examined in this paper, with an emphasis on how these three fields collaborated to treat illness and health. Using talismans, charms, and incantations—believed to ward off disease and protect the patient—played a significant part in magic. Healing and religion were closely related since prayers, sacrifices, and rituals were used to call upon gods and goddesses like Thoth and Isis to bring about healing. Early scientific methods coexisted with these mystical and religious activities; Egyptian healers used empirical procedures such as surgery, herbal treatments, and simple kinds of diagnosis. The paper will provide light on how the ancient Egyptians regarded the body and sickness in a cosmological and practical context by examining the ways in which these systems overlapped. Upon examining primary materials such as the Ebers Papyrus and secondary literature that addresses the religious and magical background of healing, I came up with this study subject. Because these systems were combined in ancient Egypt, it became a fascinating place to study how individuals in premodern civilizations dealt with illness and health. In addition, the subject focuses on more general issues in the development of science and religion, namely the ways in which individuals interpret pain, disease, and recuperation.
