Objective: This assignment has you delve into local history to understand and connect our local Michigan history, particularly Native Americans and settlers to the lives of your students. The goal is also to create a project that uses artifacts, primary, and secondary resources. This is relevant to the Michigan Department of Education Social Studies standards that prioritize learning about the indigenous people of Michigan. This is content that will be on your Michigan Teaching exam. The intention is also to foster creativity, and critical thinking, and make local connections.
Task: You will develop an activity for second-third graders or fourth-fifth graders that surrounds the main Native American groups of Michigan.
· Include at least three Native American groups and how/when/where/why they interacted with settlers. Explain details about the groups. Create a chart of relevant information for students to complete. Connect to the MDE Social Studies Standards.
· Use your textbook and or outside sources (cite the information) to inform your knowledge of MI Native Americans. Our HFC APA website: https://hfcc.libguides.com/citations/APA. Create a fun and interactive assignment. It is not a lesson plan, but an ongoing project.
· It should include at least two activities:
o an independent activity
AND
o group activity
· Outline the activities and include different worksheets to monitor the independent and group components.
· Explain the assignment to the student in grade-appropriate words
· Write ½ a page to the instructor explaining your ideas on creating this assignment.
