Part 2 – Position paper. Students will write a comprehensive and reflective position paper on the
topic they have chosen. Some of the topics are emotionally charged, but students are expected to
defend their position from their heads, not their hearts (use FACTS to defend your position).
Students are expected to present the issue and support their argument with at least five peerreviewed academic articles published within the past five years, integrating some of the sources that
they found in their literature search. Students are also expected to include at least two other highquality sources, such as reports, government publications, policy documents, and books or book
chapters (not including your textbook). The paper should be a maximum of 3,000 words, excluding
title page and references; anything beyond 3,000 words will not be marked. Papers should be in
APA format, use 12-point Times New Roman font, have one-inch margins, and be double spaced.
Position papers will be graded according to the following categories: (1) Introduction; (2) Content
and analysis; (3) Research and sources; (4) Conclusion; (5) Organization and structure; (6) Writing
style and mechanics; and (7) Adherence to APA 7th ed. Please see Appendix C “Grading Criteria for
Position Paper” for a detailed outline of how grades will be assigned for this assignment.
