Annotated Bibliography Assignment Template
Title of Paper on title page:- The Review of ……..
The Overarching Theme/Title of my Paper is (one concise sentence):
Your 24 studies should be equally organized and numbered 1-24 under your 3-4 subthemes. Include 4- 5 qualitative studies conducted with interviews or case studies.
Subtheme 1: and Name
Add the Numbered associated written summaries below
Subtheme 2: and Name
Add the Numbered associated written summaries below
Add additional subthemes as needed (no more than 4). Studies equally distributed among the subthemes
Use only single study research articles. If you do not see the words purpose, participants, data collection/analysis, findings etc – you have not selected single study research. Do not use meta-analysis, systematic review, review of the literature, data-set studies, discussion, commentary type articles, PhD dissertations, or books. All research should be currently published in the last 10 years (5- 7 years preferred), unless the research is seminal (milestone, key findings, very important to the field). Send the study to me for approval if you would like to use an older study.
** Action Required**
Please send two of your annotated bibliographies to me for review via APUS email prior to submitting your week 3 assignment to ensure that you are on track. Allow time for me to review and provide feedback and for you to resubmit for final approval several days in advance of the week 3 due date. Meaning please do not send your examples the day before the assignment is due!
Optional
Use the template below when writing your annotated bibliographies. For your own use, you can also create a table and plug the information into the table. Organizing the study information in a table is helpful when comparing and contrasting methodologies, sample size, results, etc, to support your unifying theme. Open the link to the table and then use the Make a Copy option so you have a document that you can edit.
In paragraph format (without the questions), provide the following information using 250 words or less. Use past tense when discussing the research process and findings. There are no citations in an annotated bibliography.
******
Provide no more or less than the sentence amounts noted below for each required item
There are NO citations in an annotated bibliography. See this link to review APA citation format. Using Double Spacing provide the following information
All first sentences begin as:
Researcher last name (year) examined, evaluated, investigated, explored, studied, assessed, etc what topic for what purpose? (one concise sentence)
What was the gap in the research that the study addressed – meaning what was still unknown about this topic? (two sentences)
First sentence – what is not known about the topic as aligned with the purpose of the study
Second Sentence – why is it important to examine this gap, meaning how did the researchers hope to apply the findings outside of the research setting
(You are writing at a more advanced level. Do not use the words the gap, what is known/unknown or why it is important…. Just state the information)
The participants included- list the number of individuals (and if noted both genders, age range in parentheses after number of individuals) (one sentence)
*Use this Exact Format- The participants included 100 individuals (66 male, 34 female, age range 18 – 44 years)
How was the data collected? (one -three sentences depending on methodology)
How was the data analyzed? (one -two sentences)
What were the findings? (two- three sentences)
What are the implications? (two – three sentences) More often this should be 3 not 2 sentences as this is why research is conducted!
Do not use the word Implication – just state how the findings are applied outside of the research setting to help others. Examples: Revise training programs, create interventions, psychoeducation programs, treatment protocols, inform policy makers, inform insurance providers, develop or prove theory, etc (add your own thoughts here as well).
Results added new information to the field, extended previous findings, additional research needed (these items are common to all research)
Understanding or Insight into the topic is not an implication
Lastly state how the results support, (are aligned with, are in line with, etc.) the subtheme the study falls under. Use this Exact Example – the results support the subtheme treatments for depression because the study was based on the use of CBT.
Follow this Example
Ruth, N. & Schramm, H. (2021). Effects of prosocial lyrics and musical production elements on
emotions, thoughts and behavior. Psychology of Music, 49(4), 759–776.

Ruth and Schramm (2021) evaluated the effects of music on emotions, mood, and prosocial behavior to determine if the lyrics or the accompanying music was the cause. Previous researchers had focused on the lyrics and not the accompanying music. The accompanying music sets the tone and tempo of the song and may have a greater effect on emotion, mood, and prosocial behavior than the lyrics themselves. The participants included 136 German students (age range 18-32 years) who were divided into two groups. The participants listened to a prerecorded song and rated how the song made them feel. The researchers used Unipark software to administer and record the data from the questionnaires. A two-factor ANOVA was used to analyze the data. Listening to songs that had both prosocial lyrics and emotional accompanying music yielded greater response toward prosocial behaviors. The accompanying music affected the emotions and mood of the participant more than the lyrics when the lyrics were neutral, and the accompanying music was emotional. The use of original songs provided new information regarding how lyrics and accompanying music can affect emotion, mood, and prosocial behaviors. The findings can be used to effectively produce more prosocial music to improve emotion, mood, and prosocial behaviors which could help individuals with a negative outlook on life.
The results provide support for the subtheme the psychology of music as the study focus was aligned with the different psychological aspects music has and how it can affect others.
