“An Inquiry into Erving Goffman, the Nature of his Work in General
and his Social Action Theory More Specifically”
Assignment: Using the topic above, you are to write (type) a research
paper on Erving Goffman. This individual has contributed greatly to
the discipline of Sociology as well as other social sciences. You will
note that in our textbook, Goffman is referenced on page 19 in
Chapter 1, and pages 138, 153-158 & 160 in Chapter 6. He is also
referenced on pages 180-181, 268-269, 383 and 629 in our textbook.
A. Begin by exploring who was Erving Goffman by writing a
biographical sketch of Goffman in narrative form. Find any
background information that you can on him by using resources
beyond our textbook. (Library, Google Search, etc.) You must
however footnote your material and include these sources in a
bibliography at the end of your paper.
B. Identify and explain some of his most notable work. Again, find
(research and explore) material on his work using the library,
computer google-search, and any other sources you can find.
C. Explain in great detail Goffman’s “Social Action Theory”. What is
the significance of this work to Sociology and other social
sciences.
D. What important terms does he introduce and what relevance
are they?
E. Answer the question, “Does the research you completed on
Goffman help you to better understand him and his work
beyond what is presented in the text?” If so how?
