analyze Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” and it should point out the main theme of “The Lottery”

This is the final version of your literary analysis essay, so make sure this draft is well-organized, coherent, polished, and is at least 3 pages long. Your essay should analyze Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” and it should point out the main theme of “The Lottery” and support that theme by illustrating how between two and four literary elements contribute to that theme. You should not only summarize or respond to the text; instead, you should make a claim that must be argued. Your title should be interesting and point to the main point of the essay. Place your thesis statement in your introduction paragraph, and clearly state the main point of your essay (which will be the main theme of the story that you must prove with evidence from the text). Each of your main points should support or lead up to the proving of the thesis statement. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence, and support that topic sentence throughout the paragraph. Stay on topic throughout the paragraph, and do not jump back and forth between topics. Each sentence should lead logically to the next sentence. Develop your paragraphs by giving examples from the story, citing the story, and explaining those citations. Conclude by reinforcing your thesis statement and by answering “so what?”

Use primarily third person pronouns (he/she/it) and avoid using second person pronouns (you). Avoid slang, informal language, and contractions. Use present tense verbs and maintain consistent verb usage throughout the essay. Your word usage should be accurate. Keep other grammar errors (commas, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure) to a minimum.
Use MLA format. Your header should contain the following information: your name, your teacher’s name, your course, and the due date. Your page number in the top right corner should contain your last name and the page number. Center your title on the first page.
There should be no outside research. Including research in this assignment will negatively affect your grade. If you plagiarize any part of your essay or use AI, you will receive a 0 for the assignment. You should, however, use citations from the story to support your points. Any citations should be cited in correct MLA format and should be in a “quotation sandwich,” meaning they should be properly introduced, correctly quoted, and thoroughly explained. Not using any citations will result in an essay lacking a solid argument, which will negatively affect your grade.
