The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that you understand, and can apply, the three
levels of explanation outlined by Morgan. To this end, you need to do the following

1. Instinct. Define what an instinct is according to Morgan. List three examples of animal
behavior that you think are best explained as instinctive, as defined by Morgan. For each
one, explain where the observation comes from (i.e., your source) and why you think
these qualify as instincts.
2. Intelligence. Define what intelligence is according to Morgan. List three examples of
animal behavior that you think are best explained as involving intelligence, as defined by
Morgan. Keep in mind that his definition of intelligence is very different from what we
normally think of as intelligence. For each one, explain where the observations come
from (i.e., your source) and why you think these qualify as indications of intelligence.
3. Reason. Define what reason is according to Morgan. List three examples of animal
behavior that you think are best explained as revealing reason, as defined by Morgan. For
each one, explain where the observation comes from (i.e., your source) and why you
think these qualify as demonstrations of an animal’s reasoning ability
