For this assignment, students will select a “dimension of difference” (in other words, a social identity that has been marginalized in our society) that represents a substantially different life experience than their own. They will conduct a search of the scholarly literature pertaining to their “dimension of difference” and choose at least 8 articles that help increase their understanding of the experiences of this targeted group or population in the dominant culture within the United States. These articles will be used in the literature review portion of their final papers.
This assignment should have three components:
- One paragraph reporting on which “dimension of difference” you chose, why you chose it, and what particular questions you have about this group or population.
- An annotated bibliography of at least 8 articles from your search. Each entry should include an APA formatted reference citation of the article followed by a brief summary and assessment. Please see examples of annotated bibliography entries provided by the instructor.
- One or two paragraphs summarizing the following two handouts from Pharr that will help you analyze the findings from your literature through an oppression and justice framework. (These summaries will ensure that you are comfortable with the authors’ main ideas and concepts, which will help you in writing your final paper):
Lee Anne Bell-“Theoretical foundations for social justice education” (pp. 34-41) &
Iris Marion Young-“Five faces of oppression” (pp. 49-59)
Papers should be typed, numbered, double-spaced, and formatting according to APA guidelines, including the use of headings.
This assignment is worth will be graded according to the following criteria:

- Clear and logical flow of ideas
- Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and use of APA formatting
