TASK
In this 7-8 page essay, you will support an argumentative thesis with research from a minimum of six (6) authoritative sources. You will support your thesis with a minimum of 3 reasons or claims while also acknowledging the opposition and rebutting the opposing view. All body paragraphs must adhere to the standard organizational elements and evidence requirements as outlined for Unit 3, including evidence primarily in the form of paraphrases. 
You will accomplish the following objectives: 
* Locate, retrieve, and evaluate data from sources needed for effective research writing
* Compose and revise research-based documents for diverse audiences and purposes

This project involves the following steps:
1. Develop an argumentative thesis statement
2. Establish context and use research to support a position on the established issue
3. Provide opposing viewpoint(s) and rebuttal content
4. Execute proper APA formatting
5. Review the Unit 3 Argumentative Research Paper Rubric (250 points) so that you know how you will be assessed. 
STRUCTRUE & CONTENT
Introduction (one paragraph)
* Your first paragraph is your introduction. This paragraph should end with your Thesis Statement (your position statement which your reasons will support).
Background (minimum one paragraph) – See Background guidelines on D2L 
* The background is meant to establish context on the controversy surrounding your topic, with the aim of making your argument points easier to understand. Imagine a reader who is less familiar with the topic than you are. What is the issue at hand? What details do your readers need in order to enter this “conversation”? Is there any important historical context or definitions of key and/or unfamiliar terms or concepts to share?
Your Argument (4 reasons minimum) – See sample essays on D2L
* This section of the essay consists of your Reasons/Claims that support your thesis. You must have a minimum of four reason paragraphs (one paragraph per reason) written in CSET format. You may have an additional paragraph or two for one reason if your content or source material seems too long and would benefit from this organization. Note: Your use of transitions should make it clear when you are continuing the same point in a new paragraph versus starting a new Reason/Claim.
Counterargument & Rebuttal – (2 CSET paragraphs minimum)
* Counterargument – This section of the essay is where you introduce the opposition’s reason (the one you’ve selected to highlight). Note: Remember to use a signal phrase in your topic sentence to avoid possibly sounding like you have changed your mind! 
* Rebuttal – The next paragraph(s) will be your rebuttal, which responds to the opposition. This is where you get the last word arguing about why the opposition’s point does not detract from your own original argument; alternately, you could point out what may be lacking in the opposition’s argument, showing how your position is still valid. Key transitions will be used here as well, including Although clauses in partial concession language.

* This paragraph includes a brief recap along with a look ahead which may include a call to action or a glimpse of future implications (See lessons for more info)

* Length of essay: 7 – 8 pages total  (page length does not include APA title page or references page)
* Text Formatting: Double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman or Calibri font
* APA Format: Title page, References Page, and internal citations throughout the essay (APA Style Resources)
