Assessing the Legal and Political Strategies of an Athlete Applied to Protest a Social Issue

The first section of this course sought to provide historical and theoretical grounding for continued
study of the productive and complex intersections of athletes and their activism. We have looked at
major cases and systems/institutions of inequity; discussed the legal and extra-legal framing of
arguments about protest, free speech, and justice; and discussed the political machinations that
work as both tools for a change and obstacles to reaching clear goals.
In roughly 1,250 words (five pages, double-spaced), use this foundation to compose an essay
contextualizing the activist work of an athlete, i choose Megan Rapinoe.  


Use our readings as grounding, but you will want to do some additional research into the
who/what/where/when/why of how they came to speak their voice. Consider (but do not simply
answer) the following guiding questions as you compose your essay. 
Core Definition and Purpose 
● What does activism mean to this athlete?
What were they advocating for, specifically? Were they specific? Why or why not? To
what degree would more or less specificity help or hurt their action? 
● Who in history did the athlete model their activism after and how is their activism similar
to or different from that of their role model? 
● What challenges or baggage might your subjects have carried that hurt their protest or
action? 
● How is their action connected more broadly to others and other struggles? (Think
Systems Thinking) 
Legal and Political Constructs 
●To what extent is their protest oriented towards a legal vision of justice? To what extent
is it oriented toward extralegal visions? 
● How was their work politicized or how did they use politics intentionally? 
● Is it a successful model? Have they had an impact? Did they leverage their network
well? 

Communication and Partnerships 
● How do they communicate? Social media, traditional media. 
● Have they aligned with an institution to expand their reach?
