INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract – Climate change has a significant impact on worldwide climate patterns, leading to repercussions such as changes in sea levels and socioeconomic development on every continent. Due to its close proximity to the North Pole, Greenland is notably vulnerable to the direct consequences of climate change. The present thesis introduces a comprehensive analytical framework using the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) and the Socioeconomic Vulnerability Index (SVI) for the purpose of assessing the level of coastal vulnerability in Greenland. The Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) quantifies the physical vulnerability of coastal areas to environmental change, taking into account variables such as sea level rise and erosion. In addition, the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) assesses the socio-economic resilience and adaptive capacities of coastal communities. This research aims to achieve an in-depth understanding of coastal vulnerability in Greenland, including several indicators that consider both environmental and human factors. The data to be utilized consist of Landsat satellite imagery in conjunction with publicly available resources, including census population and infrastructure data. The proposed methodology offers a robust framework for evaluating the intricate interplay between three climate scenarios, as outlined in the IPCC Report, and their economic repercussions within a specific geographic region. The primary findings will be showcased through a WebGIS platform. Keywords: Costal Erosion, SVI, Greenland, Climate change, EO, GIS –
