ASSIGNMENT #1 — ESSAY SPORTS & THE COMMUNICATION OF UNIFICATION, IDENTITY, NATIONAL PRIDE & POLITICS

ASSIGNMENT #1 — ESSAY

SPORTS & THE COMMUNICATION OF UNIFICATION, IDENTITY, NATIONAL PRIDE & POLITICS

In this course, we have seen numerous examples of how sport has inspired and fostered national identity, pride, and unity in major national and international sporting events such as the Olympic Games, 9/11, World Cup Soccer and other events of consequences in both good times and in the most trying of times. What this essay commands is your selecting and thoroughly researching one such major national or international sporting event that is of interest to you, and how this was the stage for pride, unification and/or national pride for a country, state, people of a particular culture or race, etc. Professor Elizalde will be available for any assistance you need in deciding what that subject will be and/or other questions regarding the assignment.

Select one such event, and write an essay about how that major national or international sporting event is/was a forum for instilling nationalistic pride, identity and unity through that particular sport in that particular arena or forum, at that time and place. Bring in what you learned, insights and observations from the related Lesson Notes and/or Video Lessons Overviews

Be detailed and specific, and provide examples that illustrate what you are writing about, such as (but not limited to) videos, audio, photography and other illustrations, and/or articles and headlines, etc. Remember this is a research-based assignment, so while opinion is important, it needs to be based not only on your accumulated knowledge but also on the facts of the situation and presentations to let the uninitiated reader know what you have learned and analyzed.
