Chapter 8
Read and study Chapter 8 on “Verbal Style” carefully. Now reflect on the Informative Speech you gave in class. If you made any deliberate usage of figures or tropes, list ANY of them you used (verbatim) and explain briefly why you used that figure or trope in your most recent speech. Now, create at least four (4) of the following figures you could have used in your speech, should you have chosen to do so: figures of repetition, grammatical repetition, progression, antithesis, plain double antithesis, double-reverse antithesis. Write down what you could have said (be sure to label), then briefly explaining in a sentence or two how that device could have enhanced your most recent speech. Now, create five (5) of the following tropes you could have used in your most recent speech: metaphor, simile, metonymy, hyperbole, litotes, personification. Write down what you could have said (be sure to label), then briefly explaining in a sentence or two how that device could also have enhanced your most recent speech.
Chapter 11
Now that you have given your Informative Speech, read and study this chapter, which will essentially review many of the points we considered in class. List five (5) of your greatest takeaways from this chapter, “great” to you either because you recognize you applied the knowledge and/or because you want to do so for any Informative Speech you may have to give in the near future. For each takeaway you list, briefly explain in a sentence or two why you find that point so significant.
